Rated 2 out of 5 by Randy from Good looking door, but has issuesI like the door, but it's been frustrating. First, the installation instructions are poorly written in some areas. There should be more clear and complete descriptions of each step, the graphics show little detail in places where it's needed. There should be exploded views where tracks and channels meet. I had major problems with the silicone application. First time was on me, I used expired silicone and it didn't cure. I've done remodeling and I never knew silicone goes bad after a year or so. That point should be stressed in the instructions. It's obviously critical because the hinge panel has tremendous load on it, so the silicone must hold firm. Second time I used a silicone with a bonding agent. That didn't work any better. It was only after I spoke with the tech support to find out that you MUST USE 100% SILICONE, no additives. Again, it's counter-intuitive that a bonding agent would NOT HOLD the hinge panel. Third time was the charm, I bought brand new 100% silicone and it is holding fine. However, the instructions don't say how much should be applied. Too little, and it'll be insufficient to hold the door, too much and you have a hydraulic lock where the panel can't be seated properly.Second issue is the hinge. The top hinge keeps slipping. I've done everything to clean the gaskets, reseat the inserts, and crank down the screws. After a few door openings, it slips again. It only has about an 1/8th of an inch play, but it's frustrating it won't hold fast. I fear cranking too hard on the screw for fear of cracking the glass. Again, the instructions only have a vague note to "don't over-tighten screws". Again, not very helpful.
Is it possible that this unit could be used on a fiberglass tub enclosure, with u-channels up the fiberglass siliconed to the fiberglass, and the fixed panel(s) resting on u-channel base for added strength; then glass to glass hinges for door entry?
Asked by: Edward Smith
Thank you for reaching out to DreamLine. Unfortunately, the u-channel cannot be siliconed down to the fiberglass. The U-channels must be screwed into place for a secure installation. All DreamLine shower/tub doors require smooth, solid finished walls, true 90° angles where the wall meets the threshold and finished walls that are at least as tall as the shower door or enclosure. If the walls of your enclosure have any give or flex to them when you push on the wall, most likely there is a pocket of dead space behind the wall and the wall is not solid. Please make sure that your shower meets the requirements for installation before making your choice.
